What I've Been Reading Lately

Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh (#bustlereads)

I'm not exactly sure how to classify this.  I don't think I would exactly call it a graphic novel, but there were many pictures.  It was not a full length novel, but not a short story.  Someone on the internet called it a "humoristic memoir" and this seems to fit.  Anyway, this counted for the #bustlereads challenge #9 Read a Graphic Novel Written by a Woman. It was very funny, short and entertaining.  Allie Brosh also has a website, and if you have never heard of her I would recommend checking her out.  She had me laughing out loud quite a few times!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows by J. K. Rowling

This was a re-read for me on a weekend when I just felt like something familiar that I knew was not going to disappoint.  I was never one to re-read or even re-watch, unless it was a Disney movie and I was sick at home.  But lately I have been re-watching television series and re-reading some favorite books.  I have found it more enjoyable than I expected.  Even though I know what is going to happen, every time I read or watch something it is a different experience and I pick up on things I may not have noticed the first time around.

September by Rosamunde Pilcher

This past December I read Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher.  I found it because I was looking for some holiday themed books and it was recommended on more than one blog I read.  It was really great and when I was looking for something to read on a plane ride I downloaded the only other book of hers that was available from the library onto my Kindle. (I always download way more books than I need when taking trips.  For a one hour flight each way I downloaded 8 books.)  I found this book to be immensely comforting and satisfying, even as it deals with some serious issues.  Here are a few quotes:

"And if it was an omen, did she believe in omens in the first place?"

"Nostalgia drains all energy from the present, and I am too old for nostalgia."

"the air heavy with petrol fumes and the claustrophobia of surging humanity"

"With the small decision taken, she felt better."

"It was a mistake ever to sit down in the middle of the afternoon because you didn't feel like ever getting up again."

"You don't have anything in your house that you don't know to be useful nor think to be beautiful."

"Perhaps he's realized at last that the little things in life are sometimes infinitely more important than the big ones."

Happy Reading :-)
