Historical Mysteries: The Lake House

The Lake HouseI discovered Kate Morton on Goodreads by searching for authors similar to Susanna Kearsley.  Having read all of Kearsley's novels I was itching for an atmospheric mystery.  Kate Morton did not disappoint.  I absolutely loved The Lake House.

This book centers around the disappearance of baby Theo, during a party.  It is told from the point of view of 3 women, Theo's sister Alice, his mother Eleanor, and Sadie Sparrow, a detective.  There was a lot of detail and 3 narrative threads to keep a hold of, but all of the detail helped to make the ending very satisfying.

Like another great Kate Morton book, The Forgotten Garden, The Lake House sprawls across almost a decade of time.  The points of view of the story interweave among Alice as a young girl, Alice as an old woman, Eleanor before and after the disappearance of baby Theo as well as Sadie Sparrow, who in the present time discovers the abandoned lake house where the disappearance took place all those years ago.

If you like atmospheric, satisfying stories that solve long-dormant mysteries then The Lake House is a book you will surely enjoy.  I know I did!  Happy Reading.
