What I've Been Reading
I read Roxane Gay's An Untamed State in book form, which is unusual for me, as most of what I read lately is on my kindle. However, I have kept up my booksfree subsciption because sometimes I enjoy an actual physical book. An Untamed State is a story about how a young woman deals with being kidnapped and taken away from her family. At times it was intense, with scenes of rape and torture, but the intensity was relieved by stores of the main couple and how they came to be together. All together I really enjoyed this book and understand why Roxane Gay is getting all of positive press that she is. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
In order to relieve the intensity of An Untamed State, but mostly because I am a huge fan of Janet Evanovich, I next read Wicked Charms. (After I had to wait weeks for it on Overdrive.) I first realized there was a new chapter in the Lizzy-Diesel story when I was at the airport on my way home from my friend's wedding at the end of July. I was tempted to buy the kindle version, but I try to save my book money for something I think I will read again. As much as I love Janet Evanovich's quirky and entertaining novels, that are not ones I usually re-read. But I digress. I thoroughly enjoyed this light-hearted and fun novel. If you want something light and entertaining with a strong heroine and a red-hot and charming hero, then put this at the top of your list.
Emily Griffin's "The one and only" is a thoroughly engrossing and engaging novel. I read this book until late into the night when I really had no business staying up late, as I had a presentation at work the next morning. However, once I got going I just didn't want to put it down. There is an unconventional romance, but it was done exceedingly well and I found myself rooting for the characters to figure things out. This was my first of Griffin's books and I have already requested a few more from Overdrive.
Dragonfly in Amber is the second book in Diana Gabaldon's epic series Outlander. I read most of Outlander when I was home sick and it was able to distract me from much of the unpleasantness of not feeling well. Dragonfly in Amber was as good, if not better, than Outlander. I really enjoyed the mother-daughter dynamics presented in the beginning of the book, and of course going back to experience more of the epic romance between Jamie and Clare.
Right now I am reading the cozy mystery "A Killer Plot" and have Louise Penny's newest up on deck.
Happy Reading!
